WHAT TYPE OF BASE MATERIAL IS REQUIRED ?

The OPAL-Systems underfloor heating solution must be laid on a SOUND, FLAT, STABLE AND INSULATED BASE.
This could be screed, OSB panel, old tiling, old parquet, dry screed, etc.
However, OPAL-Systems does not require the installation of a top layer of screed, which allows for several cm in height to be gained, several tens of kg per m², as well as the cost involved in this type of screed and immobilisation due to the drying time.

DOES THE OPAL-SYSTEMS UNDERFLOOR HEATING SOLUTION ALSO HAVE TO BE INSTALLED UNDER BATHTUBS AND UNDER WARDROBES ?

No, if these items are covering the ground, making it impossible for heat to be emitted into the room.
Non-heated areas can be covered with panels and mesh (without spreader plates or pipework) so as to obtain a continuous level for the installation of the final floor covering.

WHAT HEIGHT IS REQUIRED FOR THE OPAL-SYSTEMS INSTALLATION ?

The total minimum dimensions of the OPAL-Systems underfloor heating and glue for the final floor covering (if glued) is ~22 mm.
For safety, it is sensible to work on the basis of ~25 mm, which will allow for any possible issues in level, thickness and evenness of the final floor covering to be accommodated.
To this amount, you also need to add the thicknesses of the final floor covering and the insulation.

DOES OPAL-SYSTEMS MAKE IT POSSIBLE TO SAVE SPACE ?

Yes, much like all underfloor heating, as you do not have to put radiators on walls or in front of windows means that you gain up to 5% floor space. Its thickness at 20 mm means you can plan to install it in places where a lack of height would usually prevent the use of traditional underfloor heating.

CAN THE OPAL-SYSTEMS UNDERFLOOR HEATING SOLUTION BE DIRECTLY LAID ONTO A SPRAYED POLYURETHANE SCREED ?

Even after levelling, the evenness of sprayed polyurethane screed is insufficient to allow for direct installation of OPAL-Systems underfloor heating. A levelling screed or layer (~15 mm of fibre Égaline) should be poured to ensure evenness, horizontality and level.
The OPAL-Systems solution must be laid on a flat, stable and insulated base.

ARE SPECIFIC EXPANSION JOINTS REQUIRED ?

Lower expansion joints are not necessary as there is no top layer of screed and the Opal system is detached.
The installation instructions for the final floor covering must be observed.

CAN OPAL-SYSTEMS BE INSTALLED IN COMBINATION WITH AN OLD INSTALLATION, FOR EXAMPLE WITH RADIATORS ?

Yes, your heating engineer will be able to advise regarding the specific regulation of two types of heating operating at different temperatures.

WHAT IS OPAL-SYSTEMS ?

OPAL-Systems is an underfloor heating system, innovative for its low inertia, easy and rapid installation, which has been developed in partnership with the University of Liège, Belgium (ULg).
The main advantages of the system are:

  • Its unique responsiveness when the temperature rises and falls
  • Ease of installation
  • Low profile
  • Its lightness means it can be installed in renovation projects
  • Cost and energy savings due to the very low water temperature required

HOW DO YOU OBTAIN A FREE QUOTE ?

If you have a project and you would like to receive a free, no-obligation quote, please send us a plan view of your project. From that we will work out a survey including the zones to be heated and any areas that will not be heated and on which our quote will be based.
